Ebola Virus Disease (EVD)

Hii guys....
Today I decided to cover this disease cause recent outbreak is Ebola in Democratic Republic of Congo. Till now cumulative total of 58 Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) cases, including 27 deaths have been reported. Case fatality rate is 47%.

What is EBOLA????
Ebola Virus Disease also known as Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever (EHF) or simply Ebola caused by Ebola virus.
The disease was first identified in 1976 in two simultaneous outbreaks, one in Nzara and the other in Yambuka, a village near the Ebola river from which disease takes it's name.
Ebola disease spreads only by direct contact with the blood or other body fluids of a person who has developed symptoms of the disease. Body fluids that may contain Ebola viruses includes saliva, mucus, vomit, feces, sweat, tears, breast milk, urine and semen.

Preventive measures of EBOLA

1) Wash hands as needed
A simple and basic preventive measure is to wash hands with soap and water.

2) Isolate the patient
The infected person should be in barrier isolation from other people.

3) Wear protective clothing
People who care for those infected with Ebola should wear protective clothing including masks, gloves, gowns and goggles. These measures are also recommended for those who may handle objects contaminated by an infected persons body fluids.

4) Dispose of needles and syringes safely

5) Dispose of waste safely
All equipment, medical waste, patient waste and surfaces that may have come into contact with body fluids need to be disinfected before disposal. Disinfection can be done with heat (heating for 30 to 60 minutes at 60° C or boiling for 5 minutes), alcohol based solvents, sodium hypochlorite and calcium hypochlorite.

6) Use safe burial practices
Certain burial rituals, which may have included making various direct contacts with a dead body, require reformulation such that they consistently maintain a proper protective barrier between the dead body and living.

There is no specific treatment is currently approved, treatment is limited to supportive care therefore preventive measures are very important in this case.

The most important and basic thing which I prefer is the education of the general public about the risk factors for Ebola infection and of the protective measures individual may take to prevent infection.

Thank you....
